Homemade Cleaner

My smooth top range has been in need of a good cleaning. I have resisted buying the special product that I previously used to clean it since it's rather expensive, even when I have a coupon.

A few weeks ago I read on Jo-Lynne's blog, Musings of a Housewife, that she used a mixture of vinegar and water to clean her stove. Being the skeptic that I am, I waited awhile before deciding to try this idea. When I realized that I already had an empty spray bottle, along with white vinegar, in the pantry, I mixed up a half portion of what she made (my skepticism rearing its head again!) and it did a great job! While there are a few stubborn stains that I don't believe would come off even with a designated cleaner, the water and vinegar mixture gave it a good de-greasing and a lovely shine!

I think I'll try this cleaner on some other household tasks. Making my own inexpensive cleaner works for me!

Now I would like to know what works for you in the area of hair shampoo. I would love to try a natural shampoo, so if you use one or know of one that works well, please share it with me in the comments section.

  2. About 2 months ago, another WFMW post was about going "no-poo" (no shampoo). I've been doing it since then and LOVE it. Basically, you use a baking soda and water mixture for shampoo and either diluted apple cider vinegar or diluted lemon juice for conditioner. We use the lemon juice because we don't like the smell of the apple cider vinegar. Feel free to e-mail me (rahrah@aristotle.net) and I'll try to send you the links I found when I researched it.

  3. I recently discovered how well plain old vinegar and water works for cleaning. SO cheap too!

  4. Oh I LOVE vinegar as a cleaner. I have a gas stovetop that is hard to clean ( seeing that I can NEVER NOT boil over my potatoes) and the vinegar mixture does great. It still doesn't get the real bad stains - still looking for a miracle cure on that one.. but it does a great job.

Glad this is working for you

  5. No idea about the shampoos, but I will agree that the vinegar & water works! I haven't used it at home (I have a stash of store bought cleaners that I want to use up, since I did spend money on them...). However, I babysit twice a week for a friend's infant at her house and my toddler did some crayon drawing on their wall. I was, of course, thrilled (NOT). She has two spray bottles in the kitchen; one marked "vinegar" and one marked "peroxide". I decided to try out the vinegar, thinking the crayon and pencil on the wall couldn't get much worse. Well, the vinegar paired with a towel, got the job done and their walls were crayon and pencil free when we left that day!!

  6. I think Simple mom recently did a post on this. I am tempted to try it myself, although my family is totally skeptical :) If you decide to do it, please share!
