Today's tip was brought to mind by an e-mail conversation I had last week with a reader regarding boiling potatoes. Whenever I am boiling water for potatoes, rice, pasta or anything else, I try to remember to lay a wooden spoon across the top of the pot. In most cases, this prevents the water from boiling over and creating that sticky mess on my stovetop. I'm sure there's some "scientific" explanation for it, but I'm just happy that it works for me (as long as I can remember to do it, that is!!)This post is linked to Kitchen Tip Tuesday and Works for Me Wednesday.

I know this tip, but always forget, lol
I have GOT to try this. You were telling me about this.. now I just need to plan a meal with potatoes..LOL
I've never heard this tip, I'm going to try it though - thanks!
I loved the story above on how your daughter lost her tooth too.
It seems that I may have heard this in the past, as it seems vaguely familiar, but I've never remembered to try it...and I've had LOTS of overboil messes. I'm going to try to remember this next time! Thanks!
If only remembering wasn't as hard as scrubbing the sticky stuff off the stovetop!
When I boil anything, I like to keep the lid on so the heat stays in the pot instead of in my kitchen. (Well, sort of, anyway.) For potatoes, my mom only puts in a couple inches of water, and it kind of steams the ones that aren't in the water. I have to stir pretty frequently, but I had to do that anyway. Cleaning up the boilovers is the WORST, though!
