Getting Older: The "Never's" and the "I Still Can's"

As I see "middle age" on the horizon, I'm realizing that there are some things that will never happen again.

I will never...
  • fit into a certain, smaller size of clothing.  Ever.
  • have my hair naturally grow in blond...or even brown.
  • be able to read fine print without either strong light, holding the page at arm's length...or wearing glasses (haven't caved to those yet!)
  • stay up all night and not pay the consequences for days.
  • ride roller coasters that have loops and go upside down.
  • eat a large piece of cheesecake late at night and go to bed feeling anything but sick.

However, while recognizing that increasing age brings with it a few limitations, I'm thankful there's still plenty that I can do.

I can...
  • cherish my husband and the love that's grown between us in twenty-one years of marriage.
  • enjoy having children who can dress, feed, and entertain themselves.
  • plan new adventures with my family while recalling with fondness all we've done together thus far.
  • continue to challenge myself mentally, perhaps even physically...occasionally.
  • be thankful for my good health.
  • choose to use this time I've been given wisely.

Yes, this few-pounds-heavier, highlighted-hairdo, and early-to-bed lifestyle has its fair share of compensations!

  1. Ugh - YES re: rollercoasters & rich desserts! :-P I'm finally giving up coasters after our trip to Galveston last Labor Day; and last night, JB brought me home crème brûlée for Valentine's...and I seriously felt like I might throw up as I lay in bed. :'(

  2. I love this post and feel the same way! Pulling out the motrin liquid late at night and realizing I could no longer read the dosage directions without glasses was a rude awakening! I now have to keep "cheaters" in the medicine box. :)

I am an "old" mom to my younger girls being in my middle forties. While I can't run and chase for as long as I could my older two, I am a lot more patient! Mothering is never ending. And such a blessings.

    1. I think I first noticed my slowly fading eyesight when I was checking some of my younger daughter's math work. The print in the answer key is small and I started having difficulty reading the fractions!! My birthday is in April so I'm committed to not checking on getting glasses before then. ;)

  3. Great list! I relate many times over. Reading fine print is next to impossible these days. Of course, I still ride the roller coasters. I just have to visit the chiropractor now to put things back into place. ;)
