Are You Raising a Bookworm?

Reading books is a pastime our whole family enjoys. Not only do we frequent our county library, but nearly every vacation we take includes a trip to a national chain bookstore or, preferably, a local used bookstore with hidden treasures tucked away in the midst of dusty old volumes.

From the time our girls were infants, I nurtured a love and appreciation for good literature. How? For some of my ideas, read my post over at Mama Buzz today for Five Tips for Nurturing a Bookworm.

  3. I've got a couple of bookworms, and I think it's great...except when they want me to read book after book after book and my voice starts to get hoarse. But I'm so excited that they love books, and I do try to encourage it.

  4. Nikki,

I can definitely identify!! When my girls were younger, they thoroughly enjoyed being read to - and often from the same book over and over again! I fondly remember many afternoons of my own mom reading stacks of books to my brother and I.

  5. We're all bookworms in our house too, and my entire family was when I was growing up too. I'm constantly looking out for more wholesome books for my children because they get through them so fast, sometimes it seems like they're inhaling them! They love to read silently, aloud, have me read aloud or have their Papa read aloud (or anyone else who cares to read to them!). One thing I used to do when they were little was that I would read aloud and get them to interact by helping them learn parts of the story so we'd all be "reading" together. They LOVED having me read AND being able to join in. :)

Glad to hear from another book-loving family! ;)

  7. Clara,

What a fun idea for "reading" together! I can see toddlers and preschoolers really getting into that and being so excited to be "reading" like grown ups!

My girls also read through books very quickly. That's one reason I enjoy shopping at used bookstores; we can often find older books with wholesome storylines.

  8. Tracey - I've never had much success with finding good secondhand books. All the stores I've looked in either have "rubbishy" books or the books I've looked at are so old they've become expensive again (costing more than new books!)... I'll have to keep looking, you never know, one day I might discover a treasure-trove!

  9. Clara,

Ha - I know what you mean about the ones that are so old, they've become expensive again! I'll get really excited when I spot an old elementary school reader or books we're collecting like the Bobbsey Twins series and hope against hope that the price will be reasonable. It usually isn't. I always hold those longingly and then put them back on the shelf!

  10. Tracey, I don't think I've heard of the Bobbsey Twins series before, but I just read about them online, and they sound great! I also noticed this site - I don't know if you like shopping online, but there does seem to be a few that aren't TOO badly priced - http://www.ioffer.com/si/bobbsey+twins :) Now I'm going to start looking for those books in secondhand stores... You've started something now!!! :)

  11. Clara,

Thanks for letting me know about that site! Another old series that we're collecting (and that your kids might like as well) is the Happy Hollisters. I read those as a child and it was another of my favorite series. Happy book shopping!

  12. Hi Tracey!

We're following each other on Twitter and your blog title caught my attention. I have a 12 year old girl, so I love catching other mom's with girls.

My kids love to read, especially my daughter, and so do I. I was going to invite you to visit my blog from time to time, as I do children book reviews and giveaway's each month as a Tommy Mommy.

    Take care!
