"I will consider myself a success when I am walking close to Jesus every day; building a strong marriage; loving my kids; performing meaningful work; making others "homesick" for Jesus." (courtesy Phil Callaway and Focus on the Family)
When you pillow your head at night and reflect on the events of the day, how do you determine whether or not you've been successful? I know we all may have certain regrets; perhaps a hasty word spoken in anger or a kind deed left undone. Yet in reviewing the overall course of the day, are you achieving those goals that are most important to you?
Driving along that day, I was inspired to create my own success statement; here's what I came up with.
I will consider myself a success when I am honoring God above all else; showing a sweet, submissive spirit towards my husband; training my children with love and in truth; maintaining a joyful atmosphere in our home; ministering to those whom God brings across my path; shining as a light to the world around me.
That's a mouthful! I don't expect that every day will find me excelling in each of those areas. However, if I focus on measuring how I spend my time and activity according to those priorities, I can hopefully look back at the end of a day....month....year....life, and say, that by God's grace and in His strength, I have been successful.
Have you ever written out a statement like this? How do you measure success in your life?

I love your statement! Love this idea! Have you posted it on your fridge or near desK?
ReplyDeleteTracey, I heard the same program..wasn't it wonderful?? I loved Mr. Callaway's statement. The part that really got me was when he said "making others homesick for Jesus"..
ReplyDeleteI have never written a statement like this, but I've been thinking of it since I heard the program. Last night on Focus was a guest talking about managing the household. It got me thinking about the key things that are important for our family. I think I'll write my personal statement and then make a list of our family priorities.
I love your statement, it's wonderful!
Hope you're having a great day!

Sherry,
ReplyDeleteI haven't, but that's a great idea! I think posting it near the desk would be a good way to remind myself to be using my time wisely throughout the day.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Erin,
ReplyDeleteI often catch Focus on the Family when I'm driving to school to pick up my girls; it comes on in the afternoons here. I missed yesterday's program, but it sounds like a great topic, so I'll try to go back and listen to it online.
I've heard of people writing a "mission statement" for themselves or their families, so I guess this is somewhat similar. Hopefully I can keep my mind fixed on fulfilling these statements that are most important to me.
We're having beautiful sunshine here today (after lots of rain!!) and I've been amazingly motivated to get work done around the house this morning. Let's hope this keeps up! ;)
Hope you have a great day as well!
Beautiful thoughts! Success is measured in so many ways... love this version... so very true.
ReplyDeleteI think my statement would have to be pretty much identical to yours - I couldn't put it in better words if I tried! May I "borrow" it?? :)
ReplyDeleteClara,
ReplyDeleteYes, you may certainly use my statement! ;) May we both be able to put it into practice in our daily lives.
I have never written out such a statement -- although I've often felt like I "should." I did develop, several years ago, a motto that's meant to reflect my priorities and which I try to live in accordance with: faith, family, friends, fun and fulfillment.

Joanna,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link! I'm going to check it out.
