Cooking Southern-Plate Style

A dear friend bought me Christy Jordan's cookbook Southern Plate for Christmas.  I've been enjoying making different recipes from it over the past couple of months.

Of the ones I've tried so far, these are my top five.  (I've linked to them on her website where possible.)

1.  Comeback Sauce.  I served this last night with chicken fingers, and I thought our girls were going to lick the bowl clean!

2.  Broccoli Salad.

3.  Sweet-and-Sour Green Beans.

4.  Terri's Dixie Cornbread.

5.  Crunchy Beef Casserole.

Our girls really liked the Apple Orchard Snack Cake, but it may be because I let them drizzle a little chocolate syrup over it.  Not a taste I'd go for, but it worked for them!

This week I'm planning to bake the Pumpkin Crumb Cake and Peach Crisp.  Wish you could stop by for a taste!

  2. Comeback Sauce is DREAMY!!! I never did much pepper, but it's the ONLY thing I put on hotdogs & hamburgers growing up!!! :-D Awww, now you've got me all nostalgic for the old Saturday morning church hot dog sale! :-)

Borccoli Salad is another fave of mine! I try to make it healthier by subbing plain greek yogurt for half the mayo and using agave syrup for the sugar. Soooo yummy!!!

Those beans & casserole sound like heaven...

  3. Is the cornbread really that good? I see that it doesn't have any sugar or honey or any kind of sweetener in it, and I'm dubious.

    1. Nikki,

Yes, the whole family liked it. I do have to say, though, that my favorite cornbread recipe is this one from Money Saving Mom - http://moneysavingmom.com/2011/01/worlds-best-honey-cornbread-recipe.html

I'll probably alternate between making the two recipes.
