Journaling

I kept a diary sporadically as a child, but as an adult I've never taken the time to write much down (other than blogging the last few years!)  After reading Gordon MacDonald's book Ordering Your Private World in January, I was encouraged to begin my personal devotional time by journaling.

It doesn't take long; I typically write 4-5 sentences each morning in a small, hardback journal.  I try to jot down what's going on in my life spiritually - like thanking God for specific answered prayer.  The hardest thing is not editing myself, but learning to just let my thoughts flow out onto the page.  After all, God knows them all anyway!

So far I am enjoying this experiment.  I think it has a way of focusing my mind on God and quieting my spirit before I actually begin praying and reading the Bible.

Do you journal in any way?

  1. No. I wish I did, and I have a lot of half empty books that I've started and then stopped. I NEED to get back to writing again!

  3. I go in and out of seasons of keeping a journal. I have trouble just jotting things down. Like you, I edit myself. Blogging is a way to journal, keeping track of events in our lives and how God is providing. But there are still those personal things that I keep close to my heart that need to be put on paper.
