Called to Holiness

For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
~ I Thessalonians 4:7

Holiness.

If I'm called to it, what is it?

It's the state of being holy which, as one definition states, is being devoted entirely to the work of God.

We often think of the work of God as what a pastor or missionary does.  Certainly there are those who are called to dedicate themselves to the spiritual welfare of others as their life's vocation.  Yet as Christians, we are all called to holiness.

What is the work of God for me today?  Well, it's instructing our children, doing household chores, praying for my husband, meditating on the Bible passage I read this morning, showing kindness to my neighbor, and so much more.

One aspect of holiness is seeing all that I do in light of Him - from the books I read to the websites I visit, to the words that I speak to the attitude of my heart.

May I daily ask myself the following:  "Am I fulfilling my calling to live holy?"

  1. Holiness also means set apart or different. God is different than we are because He is sinless and we are not. As we become more and more like Him, we become more and more sanctified or set apart. I've read the Holliness of God by RC Sproul a couple of times, and I love it!

But you're right that too many people think that God's work doesn't involve changing diapers or making lunch, much less making plastic (what my husband does). Thanks for the reminder that everything we do (if it's what God wants us to do) is His work!

  2. Living a life of being set apart, a life that most of the time not viewed in a positive light, isn't easy.

    But the blessings are great

  3. This is such a huge topic - so huge that my husband is doing a study on it to speak on at our church meeting and spreading it over 3 weeks and still barely touching the surface.

It isn't easy to be set apart to God and it isn't easy to be set apart from the world - but that is what God wants of us, and I think it's something we work on until the day we die and become truly holy (sinless).

Thank you for the excellent reminder.

    1. Yes - becoming holy is a lifelong process! Do you think you might share some of your husband's study on your blog??
