Our Most Important School Subject
What has become evident this week - and it's true no matter how you choose to educate your children - is that the most important subject I teach is character development.
It begins with obedience and moves on to compassion, honesty, gratitude, responsibility, and so much more.
It matters not if my children can spell five-syllable words or whiz through difficult division problems or write a persuasive essay if they can't treat their sister kindly or be diligent with their chores or take the initiative to wash the few dirty dishes in the sink.
Sometimes it's easier to delegate character building to a teacher or a youth pastor or Christian programming, but we - I - must not give up. Yes, I will grow weary in the struggle. But God tells me in His Word that His wisdom is available and His grace is sufficient, so I know I can do this.
And the rewards will be greater than a straight A report card or an outstanding Science project.
Amen!!! Yes yes yes!!! Praying for diligence for *me* to keep up the teaching, too
ReplyDeleteVery true! And delegating this responsibility to anyone else will not work because it shows lack of character which children WILL learn from their parents.
ReplyDeleteYou are so wise to choose the best thing over the good thing.
