My Search for 500 Things to Declutter Continues....

Last week I began decluttering in hopes of finding 500 things to get rid of in our house.

On Saturday, I cleaned out the pantry and found 13 items to throw away or recycle.

Our desk/office area yielded 11 items.

The garage was next on the list, but that's my husband's domain.  I have almost nothing out there, but in the cubby of outdoor shoes, I did find a pair of my flip flops that were coming apart!  Those went straight to the trash can.

Monday I pulled 5 things out of the living room, most of which were just relocated to other parts of the house.  (No, I didn't get rid of my favorite Bible from my teenage years!  It has lots of good, handwritten notes in it!)

Yesterday, I faced the laundry room - the actual laundry area didn't scare me, but across from it is a large closet where we keep games, puzzles, art/craft supplies, etc.  I found 27 miscellaneous things to get rid of.

I also did a quick sweep of our medicine cabinet, and found one expired medication to throw away.

That brings my grand total to 179.  I'm thinking I need to lower my expectations and go for 250 items instead of 500!  I should be able to finish the rest of the house next week and I'll share my final count with you then.

Is there a room in your house that you dread cleaning out?

  1. Wow! You've found a bunch to get rid of, but not as much as I did. I must hang on to things whereas you throw them out. :) I love looking into the drawers and cabinets where I've decluttered and seeing how nice they look now!

    1. Even though it doesn't look like I'll have a high number of items that I've gotten rid of, this process is making me think twice about bringing new items into the house. I guess it goes back to the KonMari method, too - I only want to bring in items that I really love and will enjoy having in our home.

  2. Good job. Not finding 500 items is not a bad problem to have. I got rid of so much when we moved but continue to go through things and find things we really don't need. I haven't been doing it consistently lately. Need to work on that.

  3. I agree with Janet - it just means you are already living more on track! :-)
