Grasp Now

Source

I tend to be a forward looking person.  I enjoy having future events to anticipate - whether it's a family vacation, a meal out with my husband, or making a purchase I've been saving up for - and I think that's a good thing.

But what I don't to do is wait for a future event to make me happy.

I talked with my daughters about this recently.  There are many things they could hold up as benchmarks for happiness - when I can drive, when I have a boyfriend, when I'm a senior, when I have enough money to buy those shoes I want.  I simply encouraged them to look around and be grateful for all they have to enjoy this day, in this moment, to grasp "now."

Grasp means "to seize and hold firmly."  What opportunities can we seize today?  Rather than let the small moments slip past us, let's hold onto them firmly just for this moment that they have been given.  Is it sharing a hug with your child, holding your husband's hand, taking that first bite of one of your favorite foods, sitting in the spring sunshine for five minutes, reading one chapter of a book, savoring a favorite hymn?

Today may I grasp "now," finding my happiness in what God has given me to enjoy for this day.

What's a good thing you can grasp today?

  1. Such a good reminder, Tracey and something I've been struggling with a bit lately. I did make a point of doing that this weekend but need to be more mindful daily.

    1. I admit to having to remind myself of this very idea this morning :) As I usually say, writing about a certain topic usually means I need a lot of help in that area!!

Have a great rest of your Monday!

  2. Oh! It's so easy to get caught up in this, especially on the hard day! I know from too much personal experience the grief of wasting the "now" trying to get to the "when..." Thanks for the reminder, Tracey! Chris

  3. This is great advice for your daughters. Right now, I'm a little focussed on how beautiful life will look when I get a full night's sleep. :) Thanks for the reminder to enjoy (what I can of) these middle of the night meetings with my baby.
