Country Roads

It's a route I took many times during my childhood.

Traveling the country roads that took us to my grandparents' homes, we children received a drive-by history of many sites.

There was the house in which my mom grew up with her three siblings. On the corner was the country store, owned and run by extended family members. Across the street was her grandmother's house where they sometimes spent the night.

On the left was my paternal grandparents' house. We would drive slowly past the one-room schoolhouse my grandmother walked to, then past the church her family attended faithfully for many years. Behind it is the cemetery that holds the bodies of many departed loved ones.

Last Saturday, we took those same roads as the funeral procession wound its way to that very cemetery. It had been a long time since I traveled those roads, yet I found myself pointing out the same landmarks to my children, straining my memory to recall all that my mom told me about them, wishing I'd paid more attention when she reminisced about her past.

While it's people and shared memories that create our family bonds, these sturdy old buildings are a link to our past, a tangible part of our heritage.

Less than twenty minutes from where we currently live is the house to which we brought both of our children when they were born. I can't remember the last time we drove by and shared the moments when we welcomed them into our home. Maybe it's time to begin building some physical links for them, so that one day they can drive past, with little eyes gazing out of their car windows, and show their children a piece of their legacy.

Are their any places from your past that you visit with your children?

I am grateful to each one of you who expressed your sympathy and lifted up prayers on our behalf during this time of loss for our family. Having such thoughtful and caring readers and friends is truly a blessing!

  1. Good morning! We live 400 miles away from my past - so when we do visit I try to point things out to the girls. I'm hoping that as they get older they will retain a bit more :) I'm also scrapbooking my childhood complete with photos of where I grew up so that they will have the stories!

  2. Aurie,

I really like the idea of scrapbooking your childhood! After finishing this post last night, I was thinking how neat it would be to have photos of all the places I was showing my daughters on our trip. My grandmother that just passed away made each of us grandchildren a book that documented some of the locations and events that were memorable from her past and I know it's something we will always treasure.

  3. Tracey,
We like to do that too. I love remembering those moments when we first brought our DD home, almost 10 years ago now. Wow, where does the time go?

    Take care,

  4. I blog for my daughter. Someday I will print all the pages and give it to her. I try to include a broad scope - memories, special events, spiritual matters, my heart, homemaking, family, all things that I hope will encourage her and fill in those gaps.

My roots are in TN. Every time we go we try to visit the town where my parents grew up, there parents grew up, and so-on. It's fun to see the houses, churches, and school buildings. Oh, I should blog about it. Then Jane will have it on paper!!!

  5. What a beautiful post, Tracey, and beautiful memories. So glad you were able to reminisce as you said goodbye to your grandma. I've been praying for you!

And a country store? One-room schoolhouse? What treasures in your family history!! I love visiting places such as those...in fact, I make it a point to visit them if I can when we are out and about!

Now that we have moved, anytime we visit WI ~ I have a different perspective now and look back with fondness. =) My hubby is now getting the chance to show my kids more of his family history and memories here in MO.

    Blessings on your weekend,
    Katie

  6. Melissa,

I think it's wonderful that you blog for your daughter; what a treasure trove of your love, personality and emotions she will have! I think it would be great to document those Tennessee sites for her - then we could all enjoy them, too! ;)

  7. Katie,

Thanks so much for your prayers! Through every event that occured, we could definitely see God's hand and His blessing.

It was a neat drive. The funeral was held at a funeral home near the heart of a big city. The nearly half-hour drive to the church cemetery took us to an area that is still largely rural and just beautiful. I know I didn't appreciate those roads nearly enough when I was younger!

  8. Occasionally, we take a field trip near the house we lived in when our first two children were born, and I try to stop by to point it out to them. We owned a small farm then, so life was a little different than the suburbs where we are now.

I also like to drive past the house that I grew up in. It's much closer. My parents moved into it when I was one, and they moved out when I was pregnant with my first child...so about thirty years. Possibly, one of our friends when we were single is actually going to buy this house, so I hope he and his wife wouldn't mind us looking around for the memories. We'll see.

  9. Nikki,

I think it would be so neat to walk through that house! A number of years ago my mom was able to walk through the old house where she grew up; I think you have a whole different perspective on how it looks now compared to how it was back then.

Next time we visit my parents, I need to drive our daughters by the house where I spent many of my childhood years. It's not far from where my parents currently live; I just haven't taken the time to go by there.
