Learning Contentment

"Learning contentment does not mean expecting changes in our circumstances, but expecting Jesus to be enough in our circumstances."  ~Jackie Kendall in Raising a Lady in Waiting

So often I'm looking for that change in my circumstances to bring contentment.  If only this trial goes away or that difficulty evaporates or if that bump in the road smooths out or that roadblock is removed or if that money comes in, then I can be content.

But it's not the circumstances that need to change.  It's me.

Whatever I'm going through, I can know that Jesus is enough.  It's not in my strength that I can live in an attitude of contentment, but through His.

As with all learning, it's a process.  Seeing what He's done before, how He's worked, how my faith has grown, hopefully moves me to contentment more often than frustration.

I can be content with my lot in life today because of His grace, His power, His strength, His mercy, His love.  It's enough.

He's enough.

  1. Very much along these lines, one of the most powerful quotes that has gotten me through some rough trials is: "God is more interested in changing your heart than your circumstances."
