5 Ways to Celebrate the End of the School Year

We are very excited about finishing our third year of homeschooling next week!

I love to mark these family milestones, so I've listed five ways to celebrate the end of the school year.

1.  Give a small gift.  I like summer-related items that can be used for entertainment in the coming months!  For younger children, this could be bubbles, water toys, or a sand bucket and shovel.  For older children, it could be a special book to read, tools for a favorite hobby, a craft project kit, or art supplies.

2.  Make it a family night with a favorite meal followed by a movie.  I'm merging this with our Memorial Day meal, so we'll be grilling hamburgers, cutting up a watermelon, and making homemade ice cream.

3.  Create a photo book with pictures from the past school year.  Compile pictures you've taken from school concerts, field trips, class parties, and other celebrations.  You could do this project with your child or present it as a gift.  You might include pictures of art projects and special papers you've scanned into the computer.  Look for coupon codes at various photo websites and you should be able to do this inexpensively.

4.  Have a summer planning party.  Sit down with your children - maybe over cookies or another treat you've baked together - and make a list of fun things you want to do together during the summer.  I'm trying to plan one activity a week so we have plenty of time for quiet, at-home days, spontaneous fun, and other unplanned activities with friends.  You could even include some type of service project on your list.

5.  Take an end-of-the-year family field trip.  This is our tradition, which we did last Saturday.  Ours involves a picnic at a waterfront park, a walk through part of downtown, and a stop at Kilwins, our favorite ice cream store.

Do you celebrate the end of the school year with your children?  What are some other fun ways to mark the occasion?

  1. We did not celebrate the end of our school year, and I wish we had. I wanted to; I just didn't know what to do. So I'm going to pin this post for next year. What great ideas!

  3. Fantastic!!! I always regret not planning some way to make the end extra special, but this year, we're going to an indoor trampoline jump place with friends to celebrate! :-)

  4. When I pinned this post, I discovered that I had pinned another one of yours: ways to celebrate the first day of school. :) We'll have to try some when August rolls around and we start "real" school.

  5. What fun ways to celebrate! We school the entire year with a few weeks off here and there, so we do little fun events sprinkled throughout the year :)
