From the Why to the Who
"Why did this happen to me?"
"Why has this particular struggle come to my family, to someone I love?"
I would think we've all asked this question about a specific situation at some point in our lives...or, if not, perhaps we will face it in the future.
In our humanity, maybe we feel like if we could know the why, that in understanding we could accept our circumstances, that our minds would be able to make sense of it.
I don't think having the why cross our minds is wrong....but perhaps dwelling in the why can be.
When those thoughts come to my own mind, I have to remind myself to move from the why to the Who. I can't often get to the why; God may not choose to reveal to me the reason He's allowed what's crossed my path or afflicted someone I love.
But I can always know the Who. I can choose to believe that God is in control and that He is at work for His glory and for the good of His beloved children.
The key in moving from why to Who?
Trust.
If I had to claim a life's verse - especially in recent years - it's Proverbs 3:5,6. "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
When I can bring my focus around to Who, how can I doubt that the God Who loved me enough to send His Son to die for me can only be working in my life and in the lives of my loved ones for good? Not always good in my eyes, but always good for His eternal purposes. The very thing I struggle against could be that which turns my life around, that which draws me closer to Him, that which is a testimony for Him that affects the lives of others.
Psalm 9:10 says, "And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee." I trust, I seek His will, He promises not to forsake me.
When we wander into "why," let's lean upon trust, and look to the One "Who" holds it all in His hands.
Years ago I choose Proverbs 3:3-6 as my "life verse". I am amazed how I forget to do what I read in those verses! This is a great reminder to intentionally move from the "why" to the "Who", regardless of the situation. Thank you, Tracey, for for the reminder! Needed this today! Chris
ReplyDeleteIt's been a crazy day, and I haven't had time for blogging or anything. But I wanted to let you know what was going on because I know that you'll be praying. We had to evacuate our house today. It hasn't flooded, but we're afraid it might. We're in a hotel tonight.
ReplyDeleteYes, Nikki - thanks so much for letting me know - praying for your family and your home, for God's protection and peace!!
DeleteStill praying for y'all, Nikki! It's been SO CRAZY!!!
DeleteOh my goodness, Tracey...I LOVE this so much. Yes, yes, yes! I've been thinking about this lately, so your wise and lovely words have washed over me as confirmation from Abba. Thank you, thank you.
ReplyDeleteI finally found time to read this post, and it's so applicable right now! God's pretty great in how He works these "coincidences," isn't He? :)
ReplyDeleteOh, we're home now. John doesn't think the water will rise anymore, and our house stayed dry. Thank you for your prayers!
DeletePRAISE!!!
DeleteSuch a good reminder. Dwelling on the why usually leads to stress and self-focus. The Who always leads to peace.
ReplyDeleteWell said!!
DeleteI chose Proverbs 3:5,6 as my life verse when I was a child, and it STILL sustains me! (Of course, He does! :-D)
