Empty Spaces

Who knew I could find this much space in my closet?!

In joining Simple Mom's Project: Simplify, our assigned task for this week was to clean out the closet. My master bedroom closet is probably the greatest "dumping ground" in our house as it is fairly large and, has multiple shelves for storage. Hence, things like a bag of empty plastic Easter eggs, my children's collection of memorabilia, empty electronics boxes, and pictures that hung on the walls in previous houses gather here to commiserate their lack of a better home.

My biggest challenge was reassigning some of those items to other areas. I did accumulate a small pile of items to donate and am pleased with how much neater my closet looks.

The stack of boxes that remain are mostly books - those that my girls have outgrown, but I can't part with, and some that I'm saving for when they're older. A side benefit was that I unearthed all of our photo albums and arranged them on the shelves in one of the empty spaces. Since they are out in the open instead of buried in a tub, our children can access them whenever they want to see photos of "when they were little." Now the struggle will be to keep from adding more things into the other empty spaces!

Have you cleaned out part of your house recently? In which area do you tend to put all those items for which you can't find a home?

  1. Good Morning Tracey! Great job on your closet :) I'm a little slow on my project, so I'm hoping to post tomorrow! It's amazing how freeing it is to remove extra "stuff" isn't it?!?

  3. Aurie,

Yes, it truly is! I tend to throw things out pretty readily, so never think I have much to get rid of - but I always find more to toss or donate than I expect!

  5. Mrs. Stam,

Thanks! It's actually pleasant now to walk in there and choose my outfit for the day.

I remember your sharing your closet with us in a video! It's always interesting to see how others take a space and make it their own.

  6. The Starr Family,

Thank you! It was definitely a project I had been procrastinating on, so I'm thankful for the accountability of the challenge that inspired me to get it done!

  7. Great job! I haven't gotten around to this week's project However, thankfully the closet isn't one of my tough spots. We moved a few months ago and I got rid of a lot of outdated clothes. Now that I see you closet though, I am inspired to find even more room for improvement!

  8. Looks great! I love your list of what was being stored in your closet - sounds like mine :)

We cleaned out my daughter's bedroom yesterday & came up with five bags (grocery-sized) of garbage & 9 (? maybe 10) grocery-bags to donate! Moving on to the boys' room today.

It does feel good to reclaim our spaces! Happy cleaning!

  9. Krista,

I think moving is one of the best ways there is to declutter! ;) I'm hoping to tackle my daughters' closet this weekend.

  10. Collette,

What a fabulous job you're doing! I'm hoping to tackle my daughters' closet this weekend. We cleaned out the playroom a few weeks ago and got rid of so much stuff. I'm always excited about restoring order and eliminating clutter in any area of the house.

  12. What inspirational pictures, Tracey! All tidy and neat!! I so am in need of doing this, and it's been on my mind all week to declutter and organize... I tend to put things in closet(s) or drawer(s). Out of sight until opened! But it's not out of my mind and drives me bonkers until I take the time to get it all tidy! =) Thanks for sharing a bit of your "nest"!

  13. Great job! I was surprised too at how much stuff had accumulated in our closet that should have been elsewhere. :-) I love having a clean closet...and it didn't take as long as I thought it would to organize it. I'm so glad Simple Mom is doing this challenge!

  15. Katie,

I'm the same way; I think that by hiding it away, I can forget about it - but it never works!

  16. WholesomeWomanhood,

My reorganization didn't take as long as I feared, either. I can't wait to see what next week's "hot spot" is!

  17. Mary,

I agree! I'm already looking forward to seeing which area of my house will be decluttered next!

  18. I love to purge so I have more space for new things...hee, hee! Actually, when I was pregnant I threw everything away and organized every corner of the house. I'm still pretty organized from that episode of nesting...ahem...craziness. Our garage needs to be decluttered but I'm not in charge out there...

  19. Melissa,

I'm with you on the garage - not my territory either...

I saw that this week's challenge is paper clutter. That's something that drives me nuts, so I actually think I have a pretty good handle on it. I'll have to dig around, though, and see if I find a stash I've forgotten about.
