Book Review & Giveaway: Money Secrets of the Amish

My parents' favorite spot to vacation is Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  We made several trips there while I was growing up and, in the years since, my husband and I have made a couple of visits of our own.  The serenity of the countryside and the simple life lived by the Amish inhabitants is peaceful and intriguing.

Lorilee Craker wrote Money Secrets of the Amish:  Finding True Abundance in Simplicity, Sharing and Saving after spending time in an Amish community studying their frugal lifestyle.  She covers topics such as reducing debt, buying in bulk, shopping secondhand, and, one of my favorite chapters, Amish Foodies. The final chapter brings readers full circle, with a reminder that the best things in life are free and an admonition to value people and time spent with those we love above all else.

Since our current lifestyle is relatively thrifty, many of the tips in this book were ones I already practice.  However, it was still an enjoyable read due to the glimpses of Amish life along with the few new tips I learned along the way.

I have an extra copy of this book to give away to one of my blog readers.  To enter to win, please leave a comment on this post sharing your best resource for money-saving tips or ideas.

The giveaway will end next Friday, July 15th, at noon Eastern time, and the winner will be selected randomly.  U.S. addresses only, please.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book from C. Grant & Company. All of the opinions expressed in this post are my own and I was not compensated for this review in any other way.  Links to Amazon are affiliate links.

  1. My best resource is probably MoneySavingMom.com. While I don't do everything she does, I do find some good deals and ideas over there.

  3. I bought my Miserly Mom book over 10 years ago and I still turn to it for ideas. For food, Family Feasts for 75 dollars/week from Mary Ostyn is great.

  4. I try to only shop the outside of the grocery store. We grow and produce most of our own food.

  5. We use Dave Ramsey's envelope system and use cash as much as possible. Thanks for the giveaway!

  6. Does anyone remember the "Cheapskate Gazette"? This was 'before' the Internet and she wrote about 3 books, and her 4th books was a bunch of the best of the best out of all the books. I still follow a lot of her tips.
    Thanks for the giveaway!!!

  7. Paying extra interest on the house. More recently, line drying clothing. I love your web site. Also, you can bake the oatmeal less for it to be more moist. Chris

  8. My best resourse is shopping in thrift stores. I get plenty of ideas there for cheaper ways to live. I've found many pieces of furniture at our local thrift store that we've refinished and that look brand new now. We've literally saved thousands of dollars by not buying brand new furniture.

  10. We pay with cash & never use credit cards. We're debt free except for our mortgage and are working on paying that down! We are big Dave Ramsey fans & have turned our lives around following his plan!
    Thanks!

  11. I live amongst an Amish community and would love to win this book. I have been learning to save money on things we need and to not buy things we want. I am hoping that somewhere in the future I will see the benefits of it. It's not really showing anything yet because we are so far behind in everything. Thanks for the chance to win Lisa

  13. Clipping coupons and matching with store sales is how we save money plus ordering free samples helps a lot too. However the Amish lifestyle has always been of interest to me and I'd love to know more about their money saving ways.

  14. I have always wanted to go visit the Amish country! I would LOVE this book. What a fun, great giveaway!

As you know, I am a couponer (not to the extreme), and love to see how low I can get me grocery bill. My favorite resource is afullcup.com where I am the Aldi Forum Leader, and part of the Welcome Wagon. If you stop by, be sure to let them know that cpht sent you. I don't get any compensation for it, they just like to know how you heard about them.

Fingers crossed that I'm the lucky winner! :)

  15. My best resource is the internet. I love going through the house and cleaning out things we no longer need and finding out how much money they are worth. $5 here and there really adds up and contributes to our bottom line. :)

Thanks for the chance to win.
