Everyone scurries to the table where we slit open the biscuits, steam rising from the center of the flaky layers, and slather them with butter, drizzle them with honey, or smear them with strawberry jam.
Well, you might have guessed that my reality strays a long way from my dreams. I've tried recipes that nearly guarantee success and talked to a master cook at my church who walked me through her techniques, all to no avail. My mother-in-law pops out perfect biscuits practically in her sleep. How can taking a few basic ingredients and creating a delectable treat be so difficult for me?
So, I have announced to my family that I have given up on making homemade biscuits. My attempts, while not terrible, have failed to produce what I want (not to mention that it looks like I lost a battle with a bag of flour when I'm done!) Baking biscuits has gone the way of making my own pie crusts...another homemaking endeavor that I do not plan to attempt again. I'll stick to homemade cinnamon rolls, blueberry muffins, and hamburger buns.
Thankfully we don't eat biscuits or pies too often. But from now on, baking biscuits in my kitchen will be preceded by the popping of a can or the snipping open of a bag from the freezer!
Is there anything you've attempted in the kitchen that you won't try again?
I've never even attempted biscuits. I'm too chicken to try! I've heard too many horror stories about how hard they are to make correctly. But I think I should attempt them at least once before I give up, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteI haven't attempted a pie crust, either. I just buy them along with our biscuits.
I've never been very good at biscuits, Tracey. In fact, I hardly ever make regular biscuits ~ instead, I make up biscuit batter like usual but add some garlic and cheese into the batter, and just make drop biscuits instead! Sometimes I'll spread a bit of melted butter on top when they're done baking.
ReplyDeleteMy sister-in-law has a wonderful pie crust recipe that I need her to share with me. At Christmas, she made the pie crust for me! :) If I get it from her, I'll share. My attempts in the past have been less than desirable.
I might actually give pie crust another try if you send me that recipe!!
DeleteHave a great weekend!
Maybe "semi-homemade" would be an option: something like a Bisquick mix. I've never actually used it for biscuits (just dumplings, casserole fillings, and pancakes), but from the name, it seems like it might work.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever tried making scones? They are almost the same as biscuits, only maybe a little softer and lighter... Anyway, I have a recipe for "foolproof scones" over here (http://recipesfromclara.blogspot.com.au/2009/09/scones.html). I know many many people who have made them and *never* had them fail - they've never failed me either. My daughter has made them and they turned out perfectly too. :) You should give them a go! And if you do - let me know how they turn out! :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't think about scones; I have made them once before and they actually turned out pretty well! I'll have to try the recipe you posted; the pumpkin ones sound delicious!
DeleteI tries different biscut recipes off and on for years, with no luck. Then I saw Paula Deen make biscuts with yeast in them. I thought ok one more try. They have been turning out great every time. You don't have to leave them to rise because of the yeast in them, just mix, cut, and bake. I also don't always cut my biscuts out with a round biscut cutter.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, I use my pizza cutter and make them pie shaped, or square shaped. They get less handling that way.
