Afraid? Trust.

"What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee." ~ Psalm 56:3

According to the notes in my Scofield Bible, the word for trust used in this verse means "lean on."  In other words, when I'm afraid, I need to lean on God.

How comforting this is!  The majority of my fears are outside of my control, so it's only fitting for me to entrust them to God.

Also, isn't it interesting that the Psalmist doesn't say "if" I'm afraid?  No, it's when.  Fear comes to all of us at some point.

Our fears may change according to our season of life.  I discussed this with our daughters recently.  At my age, you began to fear cancer or another disabling disease.  Their fears are more likely to be peer-related - afraid of what others think of them or of saying or doing the wrong thing in front of a crowd.

We fear the unknown, fear for our physical safety, for the future, for our family's well being.

The answer to every fear we face is to lean on God, to trust Him to overcome that fear, and to take care of us through every fearful situation.

I love how this song speaks to that.

What Bible verses comfort you when you're tempted to be fearful?

  1. I know this one is totally obvious, but I think that's *b/c* it's so apropos: Philippians 4:6-7
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

  2. I like Psalm 27:1: "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
