Book Review: Trim Healthy Mama Plan by Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison

I was excited at the opportunity to read Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison's book Trim Healthy Mama Plan. I always like to learn more about eating healthily and appreciate tips on building healthier habits into my lifestyle.  I'd heard of a number of people who'd had great success with losing weight and feeling better by following this plan.

The book starts with the basics of the plan, outlining the different meals and snacks you should eat to achieve success.  The next chapters delve into more detail, including specifics on foods and drinks that are especially beneficial and some of the science that makes it all work.  The authors then share how best to work the program for your particular needs - pregnant, on a budget, vegetarian, etc.

I like that the authors advocate a balanced approach.  You don't necessarily have to buy their products or follow a precise list of meals and menus exactly.  There is some built in "grace."  The plan is also adaptable to your tastes and current situation.  This is a well-researched book that gives plenty of information for readers to digest.

However, I have to confess that it was all just a bit overwhelming for me.  There are "S" meals and "E" meals and, for example, you don't want to eat an "E" snack too close to an "S" meal or mix certain carbs with certain fats.  While I'm sure it could become second nature after awhile, it just wasn't initially easy to follow.

If you were going to give this concept a try, there is a companion cookbook which would probably be helpful, though there are free recipes on their website as well as on a number of Pinterest boards.

Blogging for Books provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.  All of the opinions expressed in this post are my own and I was not compensated for this review in any other way.
